Feeling Stressed Out | Life Update!

Today's post is probably going to turn out slightly different to my usual posts just because I've sat down without any sort of plan.

I've been feeling pretty stressed out recently due to one major thing and I just wanted to get it off my chest, and maybe some of you will be able to relate? We can help each other.

You may or may not know that I've already studied level 2 & 3 Beauty Therapy at college and am now currently studying Level 3 Theatrical Hair & Make-up. I'm absolutely loving it so far, but I've already turned 18 and am actually the year above most people in my course as I've stayed on for an extra year.

I'm now in the position where I'm having to make some pretty big decisions. I can either get a full time job next year, possibly move out and start a little life for myself, or I have the option of going to University.

I've been researching different universities and courses and I currently like the sound of Bournemouth Arts University or Birmingham University. I've also been looking up part time Make-Up artist courses in London. I'm feeling so stressed out about it all because I have to make my mind up really really soon because of application deadlines etc and it feels like no matter how much I think about it, I just CANNOT make up my mind.

Ultimately, my dream job would be to become a make-up artist working on Fashion shoots and creating make-up looks for magazines, but living down in Devon isn't really the right place for that. I would happily move to London or somewhere a bit more exciting, somewhere that would make it possible for me to be in that industry, however its a huge step for me considering my whole family live in Devon. I wouldn't know anybody and it would be a huge step to take.

Going to University in September would really help me get to that higher level I need to become a successful make-up artist, as well as getting me the contacts (as it's all about who you know), however I just don't know if i'm ready, or if it's the right decision for me. It would be a three year course and I feel like that's a decent sized chunk of my life.

I feel like I am ready to move out and start looking after myself, but whether that's closer to home, I don't know. I just know I have to make the decision really soon whether university is the right path for me or if I'd be satisfied enough with just getting a job and starting my own little life in Devon.

If you've been to university or have any advice to help me out at all, then please do let me know down below. I really could to with it right now haha.

Lots of love

Emily x

  1. Personally I think University is great, it gives you a qualification to fall back on if you ever change your mind later in life. Plus if you're careful about what universities you look at you can look into what contacts or alumni they have therefore getting you industry contacts, so that you can potentially go and do a internship or placement which will give you experience for when you finish you degree. It's scary moving away from home but I think that Uni is so worth it, it's such a wonderful experience. I hope you make the right decision! Here if you want to chat more,

  3. Hi Emily,
Firstly, when I was at college I was actually older than everyone else so I feel you there.. however, I did stay in contact with a few people that were younger htan me which is quite nice and made it feel more worth it!
I'd personally recommend University. I know it's not for everyone but completely sing its praises for everyone. University makes you much more independent, it gives you knowledge in both people skills as well as that on-hand knowledge you'd need for make-up but without the cost/expertise/connections you'd need by trying to make it yourself.
I moved from Essex to Portsmouth which is quite a while away but that space away helped me immensly. I've learnt so many life skills as well as skills on my course.
However, I wouldn't say to rush your decision.. if applications are due in soon then don't push yourself down a route you're not 100% on.. I had 2 years of looking into Unis and that really helped solidify my decision.

What I'd maybe recommend is take a year to earn a bit of money, experience, part-time job and then fully immerse yourself into looking at University courses (if that's what you want to do) as well as apprenticeships and other offers open to you. That way you're earning money as you look up information. I turned 21 at the start of uni and it made no difference to me or my experience being a "more mature learner" - I actually felt it did me so much better gaining more life experience before arriving.
Feel free to contact me if you wanted anymore advice/help! :) xx
